Premonition
This painting bridges representation and abstraction by isolating the realistically rendered rabbits on a grey background and creating an interplay of positive and negative shapes. The rabbits can be viewed as heraldic or even akin to a Rorschach test, ultimately it is up to the viewer. The piece is painted in gouache: an opaque watercolor that is defined by its matte quality. The medium is inherently difficult to use because it is water soluble; to develop forms, I layered marks on top of each other, taking me several years to complete.
In 2010, the painting was included in a national juried exhibition titled “Seeing Double” at the Attleboro Art Museum in Attleboro, MA where it won a Juror’s Award. It was framed for this exhibition in a high-end wooden frame by Stanhope Framers; it was framed with plexiglass for shipping/handling purposes. The frame is a very dark brown almost black color with a double-thick, white matboard.
